The Deadly Shallows by Dani Pettrey

Genre: Christian Fiction | Thriller

Star Rating: ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️

As the third book in a much loved series by one of my favorite authors, I was so excited to read this book. While I can’t say I loved it as much as the other two books in the series, it was nice to have the story focus on Noah and Brooke.

The plot kept me guessing, and seeing where already beloved characters are now kept my attention glued to the page. It was great to hear from Gabby and Finn (The Killing Tide) and Rissi and Mason (The Crushing Depths), while continuing to read about Austin and Caleb and daydream about what might happen between Logan and Emmy.

Pettrey does a fantastic job of weaving in faith without making her books preachy. Prayer is a strong piece of every one of the team’s missions and the characters’ internal dialogue. Despite the absolute chaos around them, the characters seem to cling to an inner peace only God can give.

The romance in this book is a beautiful balance between sweet kisses and flirty banter without making these scenes too steamy or suggestive.

The plot kept me engaged with plenty of moments when I thought, “Oh, I know who it is!” only to be proven wrong. Again. I enjoyed being outsmarted by this book and playing detective alongside the characters as they scrambled to figure out just who Gator really was.

WARNINGS

One scene in the book portrays a mass shooting at an event and could be triggering for some.

QUOTABLE

She was in turmoil, but she trusted Jesus could calm the tempest raging inside her as he’d calmed the storm at sea.

Brooke, p. 121

ONE HUNDRED WORDS OR LESS LESSON

When it comes to living life with the people we love, we must remember all people have their flaws and baggage. The beauty of love is learning to live and grow together, no matter our past.
